A constitutional lawyer from Nyamira County has slammed area leaders for persistently working with top coalitions which he said were giving the community a raw deal in leadership.
Mr Steve Mogaka who is eyeing the West Mugirango parliamentary seat in 2017, said Monday there was need for Gusii community leaders to unite and come up with their political party which will increase their bargaining power in subsequent governments.
Mogaka noted that the dynamics of Kenyan politics needed marginalised communities to speak as one voice from a political party of their own to increase chances of representation in governments.
“I am really worried that our leaders who are supposed to unite us are unfortunately being used by Cord and Jubilee leadership to create divisions among us. This leads to suffering of the community in subsequent governments because we are persistently given a raw deal. Time has come for us to form a single political party,” he said.
Mr Mogaka at the same time slammed a section of area leaders who visited Deputy President William Ruto on behalf of the community early January saying they were a disgrace to the community.
“The reason why I want us to come up with one political party to increase our bargaining power is to shun selfish leaders who hide in the name of community to meet high ranking leaders. Those who went to Sugoi purporting to represent us should feel ashamed because they never held any meeting to collect our views,” he said.
He accused the Jubilee and Cord leadership of giving the community raw deal since 2008 and said the trend was likely to continue if leaders were not ready to come up with a political party that will unite them.
“We must observe the trends of politics carefully or we continue suffering. Going to Cord or Jubilee isn’t a solution. We should come with a party that can negotiate with either of coalitions before or after elections so that we are not treated as second class citizens,” he said.
