Residents of Bonchari constituency in Kisii County have been challenged to fight incidents of rape as a team by reporting the cases to the authorities for an action.
Speaking on Thursday at Suneka grounds during a football tournament, a US-based community health worker Jane Bosibori said the community had looked down upon incidents of rape, giving culprits a freedom to go scot free.
She said the community had an obligation to work with authorities by reporting the cases and also by holding the suspects and subsequently surrendering them to authorities.
“Our community has an obligation to wage a war against rape. We should report the incidents to authorities and even holding the suspects and subsequently surrendering them to authorities for actions. Let us not give such kind of people to antagonize our community,” she said.
Ms Bosibori also urged the local administrators to work hand in hand with locals to ensure the perpetrators were apprehended and taken to court.
“We also have our chiefs and their assistants whom we should work with. They too should be ready to help us deal with the perpetrators so that the menace is effectively combated in our region,” she added.
Bosisbori said she was ready to help rape victims integrate with the society by paying for their counseling and guidance through her Jane Foundation.
“I also encourage the community to help victims access my foundation offices in Kisii. I am willing to pay for their guidance and counseling so that they are integrated to the society. That is how we should help each other as a community,” she said.
