The nine street lights in Kamwangi town have drastically reduced the crime rate in the town that had seen three M-pesa agents robbed in the recent past.
Speaking from his office in Kamwangi on Tuesday, area sub-county commissioner Daniel Nyamiti said that the national government through area CDF identified and lit up all areas that were prone to grenade and gun attacks in the town as one way of fighting the runaway crime in Kamwangi town.
"Crime in Kamwangi town has come down considerably following the street lighting programme," he said.
A number of area residents too have welcomed the programme and now want it extended to remaining roads in the residential places that are still dark at night.
Speaking to this writer on Tuesday Mary Nyokabi M-pesa attendant at Kamwangi said "the street lights have greatly enhanced security and area residents can move freely at night without fear of being attacked".
"I now close my M-pesa business as 9 pm without fear of being invaded contrast to some weeks ago when I would be accompanied by my brother for security," she said.
Simon Mwangi a plumber in Kamwangi town said that at the height of insecurity, most shops closed as soon as darkness set in while residents lived in constant fear of being attacked.
He thanked the national government administration for clearing darkness along major roads in the town where some of the criminals used to hide when and after executing their crimes.
The residents lauded the light existence some weeks after the area member of parliament Kigo Njenga launched the program in Kamwangi.
