A section of youths in Limuru town have urged the national government to speed up issuance of identification cards to enable them register as voters.
The youths claim the issuance of IDs is slow in the area and fear that they might not be able to register as voters in the exercise that is set to start next month.
Speaking to this writer in Limuru town on Tuesday, James Njiraini, a youth said he applied for the document in October last year but is yet to get it.
Njiraini said he has been waiting for the document and that several trips to the areacChief’s office have yielded no fruits.
“The government should speed up issuance of IDs so that the youths who have reached the required age are supplied with IDs before the start of the voter registration exercise,” he said.
The youth said there are other many young people who applied for the IDs but have not received them.
Monicah Kabaya, a resident said that she applied for her ID in September but has not received.
She said failure to get her ID has seen her lose out on various opportunities.
“I applied for my ID before I sat the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination in October but to date nothing has been forthcoming,” she lamented.
The youths said it will be important if the government issues them with the document so that they can not only register as voters but also take part in other activities that require one to have it.
Limuru town youth coordinator Peter Kiraithe echoed the youths concerns saying that they need IDs to register as voters.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has announced voter registration set to start on February 15 until March 15.
The commission has already advertised over 2,000 jobs for personnel who will be conducting the 30 days voter registration exercise across the country.
