A lobby group in Nakuru  wants the county government to distribute more than 200 dustbins in Nakuru estates.

In a letter to the Director of Environment, Street Nakuru CBO Chairman James Wakibia pointed out that poor garbage disposal was responsible for the outbreak of the cholera diseases in the county.

Speaking in Nakuru on Thursday, Wakibia added that residents who did not have anywhere to dump dirt ended up throwing them in the culverts and drainages which ended up clogging the sewerage system.

“Even the normal drainage cannot flow properly as we have dirty diapers and used sanitary towels which forces the water not to flow. It becomes a breeding ground for various diseases including cholera,” he added.

He challenged the Public Health Department to carry out a door to door search for all the landlords who did not have a proper dumping place of their tenants.

“They should be able to arrest and prosecute them with hefty fines as they are responsible for ensuring that their clients do not look at the streets as an alternative for the garbage,” he added.

Wakibia pointed out that the county should also distribute the new dustbins allocated to the streets into all avenues.

“Some streets recently got more than 10 dustbines whereas we have some which do not have even one. Yet they are major streets in the town,” he added.
