Education stakeholders have been urged to ensure the new secondary school fees guidelines that were gazetted by the government are implemented.
The guidelines were gazetted in March following a task force report that was headed by Dr Kilemi Mwiria to oversee the rationalisation of school.
Campaigns Officer at Elimu Yetu Coalition, Catherine Asego said parents and education stakeholders should be on the lookout to ensure the implementation of the circular.
“Some parents might not be aware that there was a fee guideline by the government. I want to appeal also to the media to help us in this campaign,” she said.
She said the coalition which brings together over 100 members of civil society to address matters of education has been in the forefront to ensure the circular is implemented.
Speaking in Kisumu during a sensitisation training for the media on new school fees guidelines, Ms Asego said schools were under obligation to adhere to the new fee guidelines.
Asego said there was need for education stakeholders to create much awareness to ensure that basic education remains a right and affordable.
“We want to continue creating awareness so that no school will be seen to be charging parents more money contrary to what the guideline is stipulating,” she said.
According to the guidelines, the maximum cost of day schooling annually is Sh22,244 while that of boarding schools stands at Sh66,424 and Sh69,810 for special needs secondary schools
