Leaders from Gusii region are working to resolve the directive from Commission for University Education to close Kisii University’s 10 out of 13 campuses, Governor James Ongwae has said.
The commission last week ordered the closure of the satellite campuses, spread across the country, for failing to meet the set standards.
The issue has drawn mixed reactions from many quarters, with students at the institution protesting and authorities from the university accusing the commission of lacking openness, since it promised to deliver a report on the areas that needed to be improved after conducting an examination.
Speaking on Monday at Citizen TV’s Power Breakfast show in Nairobi, Governor Ongwae said he is confident the issue will be solved.
“The Kisii University issue is being addressed by the Kisii leadership. It is an issue that can be resolved,” he said, while discussing the upcoming Kisii Entrepreneurship Summit (KES), set to be held on February 24-26 at Kisii University grounds.
Although the students at the university’s campuses have been ordered to return to the main campus in Kisii town, many have said that the move will create congestion and dilute the quality of education.
The campuses set for closure are in Nyamira, Migori, Keroka, Ogembo, Eldoret, Eldama Ravine, Kabarnet, Kapenguria, Kehancha and Isebania.
