Kisumu based lawyer Isaac Okero, one of the contenders for the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) presidential seat has said that LSK needs urgent rescue from collapse.
Okero said LSK has been governed in a manner that is not in the interest of its members.
He said meetings that had been convened by the society had been aborted twice, exposing the body that is made up of lawyers who should be the custodians of law.
“We are professionals, learned friends and we should not overlook what the constitution says and what LSK stands for. It is laughable and paints us in bad light when every time we have a meeting it is chaos,” he said.
He accused the current office holders of failing to adhere to the laws governing LSK, noting that members are ready to make sweeping changes that will deliver the desired goals.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu, Okero said he has a wealth of experience to manage the body and bring in meaningful change.
“I have never been at the council but have been the chairman of Kisumu Chapter. I have what it takes to lead LSK in that capacity of president,” he said.
He further faulted LSK top officials and council members of bias in allocation of slots reserved for LSK members in various agencies and institutions in the country.
Okero said the positions have only been awarded to council members and those lawyers related to them instead of calling for competitive applications.
“Traditionally, these bodies use to send invitations to LSK to fill certain position and members would apply. Now, we don’t see them, we only see members filling them, I would like to know which criteria is being used,” he said.
The LSK election scheduled for early next year has attracted only three candidates for president seat, namely, Aggrey Mwamu, Waiyaki Gichuhi and Isaac Okero.
