Machakos business leaders on Saturday morning asked Governor Mutua to fix an access road to their premises.
Quarry Road, a 12-kilometre industrial road stretches from Mlolongo township to quarries in the area.
More than 300 tracks are estimated to use the road daily with each being charged a cess of between Sh600 and Sh1,200.
“The area is the industrial hub of Machakos. However due to the dire state of the road, our workers have a hard time accessing the workplace as no matatus or bodaboda can use the road," said J Brahmbhatt, managing director of Richfield Engineering Limited.
“Suppliers are also reluctant to deliver materials to the factories who have an even bigger challenge to deliver finished goods,” he said.
“We have been making temporary fixes to the road at our own expense yet the trucks are still being charged cess which is supposed to be for road development,” said Kenya Quarry Group representative, Jeremiah Nzioka.
Stakeholders have engaged with county government representatives to address the issue.
In response, the Machakos County Government put a notice in a local paper in July last year saying the road’s construction would commence in October.
This was supposed to upgrade the road to bitumen standards (tarmacking). However, they said, there is no indication that work is about to start.
