Machakos county  hosted the 2016 national cultural week. The event was officially opened on september 1st by Machakos governor Dr Alfred Mutua and Sports culture and arts cabinet secretary Dr Hassan Wario and it went on until September 3rd. 

The county was privileged to host the second national UNESCO'S cultural exhibition and celebration in the Machakos people's park. The event was sponsored by UNESCO and the theme was promoting intercultural dialogue and a culture of peace and sustainable development.

The cultural exhibition brought together cultural exhibitions from all counties in Kenya and it was a good opportunity for each people to showcase their cultures. Speaking at the event Mutua urged the participants and exhibitors to use the event to preach peace and cohesion so that the country achieves stability and progression.

He further called on promotion of good cultural practices and discourages the bad ones such as corruption and tribalism. 

Speakers at the event urged Kenyans to use their cultures to promote peace and cohesion as the country heads to 2017 general elections. 

Guests present included, Larry Wambua county executive in charge of Tourism Machakos county, Difna Muti ambassador Ethiopia, Kelebert Nkomani ambassador Zimbabwe among other dignitaries.
