The Machakos county government is surveying modalities of setting up a fruit processing factory in the county, governor Alfred Mutua has announced.
Speaking in Dubai on Tuesday, the governor confirmed of the impending plan saying he had met and held discussions with Mr Mohammed Jamil Joz the chairperson of Joz Group, a prospective investor.
"I have in Dubai, UAE, met and received a firm commitment for the setting up of a fruit factory (mangoes, oranges, pawpaws etc) by a huge investor - Joz Group in Dubai," he said.
"I have held discussions with the group's chairman Mr Mohammed Jamil, who expects to break ground within three months in Machakos county. His factory will employ hundreds of youths," the governor confirmed.
Mr Mutua affirmed that his administration would vitalize fruit farmers and assist in collecting fruits at favourable prices.
"My government will galvanize our farmers and help in collecting fruits at decent prices and sending to the factory. We no longer want to see our mangoes and oranges rotting on the ground whereas they can be converted to money by our farmers," he said.
The governor slammed politicians for engaging in political rhetorics instead of delivering on promises given during campaigns.
"It is important for politicians to keep to the promises they give during campaigns. As part of Maendeleo Chap Chap, I am committed to show that it is possible for Wananchi to get what they are promised and not the usual empty rhetoric," he charged.
The Machakos county chief is in the United Arab Emirates to woo investors.
