Mavoko MP Patrick Makau has urged the Machakos government to invest in damsin the area in a bid of solve the persistent water problems in the county once and for all.
Addressing the press at Mavoko CDF office in Athi River town on Tuesday, Makau said the government's attempt to address the perennial problem by drilling boreholes had completely failed.
"We need dams and water pumps as a county for the problem of water scarcity to be completely and successfully addressed. We cannot compromise underground water by drilling substandard bore holes," said Makau.
He said that the leadership of the government should be more responsible and look for lasting and credible solutions to the problem instead of turning blames on officials at the water management organizations such as MAVWASCO.
Makau condemned the suspension of the company's managing director, Michael Mang'eli by the Machakos governor terming it a scape goat by the Machakos government to effectively address water problems in the county and especially Mavoko sub county where he said the rate of water consumption was very high due to equally high numbers of industrial companies in the region.
He called on the Athi Water Services Board to equally intervene and provide the county with at least 5, 000 cubic meters of water each day to make water scarcity a thing of the past.
"We are calling on the Athi Water Services Board to help install storage water tanks at KAPA and SALAMA areas to ensure uninterrupted water supply in the county," said Makau.
Makau said leadership of the county government should equally not interfear with operations of the Athi River based Export Processing Zone Authority over water management wrangles.
"Stop thinking of EPZA, its existence is constitutional under Special Economic Zone Act of 2002. The water which was connected from Nairobi to the zone by the sate was to ensure uninterrupted water supply to companies within the zone," said Makau.
