Widows and widowers from Makairo village in Nyamira South Subcounty have a reason to smile after being financially assisted to tackle a myriad of challenges facing them in the society.

The widows, who were recognised by Dr.Evans Nyatigo, who is eyeing the Nyamira gubernatorial seat, appreciated and said that they have been neglected by both the county and national governments.

According to one widow, identified as Jemimah Ongaga, some of them were often forced from their matrimonial homes by their in-laws after they declined to fulfill cultural practices like wife inheritance.

Speaking during the function that was held on Wednesday at Makairo Chief’s office, Nyatigo disclosed that he was helping the widows after hearing their cry.

“I will ensure that widows, women and other vulnerable people in the community are catered for as they are key in our society,” he added.

He called upon them to ensure that they form groups to ensure that they benefit from the county and National government funds in the days to come.

The function was attended by over 150 widows and widowers who received cheques of  Sh20,000 each to better their lives.
