Makongeni residents have been educated on the dangers of stagnant water which has flooded the area as a result of the ongoing rains.
Speaking on Wednesday at Makongeni health centre grounds, the facility's Chief Health Officer, Paul Mwathi warned residents against coming into direct contact with stagnant water.
Mwathi said the water could have mixed with industrial and farm chemicals from nearby factories and farms which may be hazardous to their health.
"Stagnant water might seem harmless but it can be a huge health hazard. Apart from harbouring mosquito larvae that cause malaria, it has other dangers," said Mwathi.
He especially warned the bodaboda people against washing their motorcycles in the water saying that they were exposing themselves to huge health risks.
"Even if that water doesn't have chemicals in it, sharp objects or broken glasses might be there and cause injuries that may lead to infections," he said.
Mwathi also asked parents to ensure that their children do not come into contact with the water saying they may drown or contract waterborne diseases.
