Makwa residents in Gatundu North have decried the re-emergence of illicit liquor that has seen many youngsters in their area lose focus in life.

Speaking on Friday in a funeral service of Peter Mwaura 27 who was killed along river Chania, the residents decried insecurity which they attributed to the outlawed liquor.

Mirriam Wangechi, the mother of Peter Mwaura noted that his son was killed by unknown gangsters after Mwaura took alcohol and lost consciousness.

"I know that my son was killed by unknown gangsters after taking alcohol and losing conciousness near river Chania. Illicit brews have cost many lives leaving many other youths with no hope for tomorrow. The government should not allow the vice to re-emerge," she said.

Speaking at the same scene, area chief Michael Mwaniki called for concerted efforts in the fight against illicit brews citing that it’s everyone’s responsibility.

"It’s upon us all to join hands together and eliminate this vice. We have made it in the past and I believe we will still be able to do it with the support of everyone," he said.

Mwaniki added that insecurity in Makwa and especially near river Chania has been a concern to many residents around and urged youths to avoid taking alcohol and using remote routes as they go back to their homes.

He revealed that the government under the commissioner’s office in the area had promised to deploy more police officers in Makwa to help fight insecurity.

The area residents vowed to work together to stop the selling and drinking of the outlawed drink.
