A 72-year-old man was on Tuesday arrested in Ting'ang'a for allegedly raping his 12-year-old granddaughter.

The man is said to have raped the girl on Monday night in his house where the girl lives with him. The man lives with the girl whose parents died early this year in a road accident.

Kiambu OCPD Mr Stephen Ng'etich said that the minor reported the incident to her class teacher on Tuesday. The teacher immediately reported the matter to the head teacher who reported the matter to police.

He said the girl was in a lot of pain and was crying when she reported the incident. Police went to the suspect's house in Ting'ang'a and arrested him.

He said that he was taken to Ting'ang'a Police Post before being brought to Kiambu Police Station. Ng'etich said that the girl was taken to Kiambu District Hospital where she was being treated.

"Investigations are ongoing and the man is expected to be taken to court after investigations are complete," said Ng'etich.

He said that cases of defilement were rising especially during school holidays. He urged nyumba Kumi chairmen and chiefs to ensure they are vigilant to ensure such cases don't occur.

Ngetich urged them to report of any cases of minors being married off or impregnated as those responsible are adults committing the offence.

He also warned parents of minors who go negotiating when their daughters are impregnated or defiled stating that that wasn't a negotiable issue but a criminal offence.

"Any parent who is aware of their girls being defiled or impregnated and he goes for any negotiations with the suspect will be assumed to have hidden the crime hence they will also be arrested," said Ng'etich.
