A middle aged man who was allegedly caught with buffalo meat weighing Sh120,000 was on Wednesday arraigned and charged before a Nakuru court.

Joseph Kimani was accused of encroaching Lake Nakuru National Park with others, not before court, without authorisation from the concerned authorities on January 12, 2016.

Kimani faced a second count of being in possession of bush meat of a wild life specie alleged to have been a buffalo.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Doreen Mulekyo, Kimani pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Mulekyo gave the case a priority hearing of the same day on Wednesday afternoon where the investigating officer testified.

Police Constable Francis Osebe told the court that the accused was taken to Nakuru Police Station by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers with meat said to have been cut from a dead buffalo.

He also told the court that meat had been taken to government chemist for identification and other part of the buffalo was disposed by KWS officers.

Osebe said that Kimani was in company of other people who escaped after seeing KWS officers, but the accused did not managed to escape after he was chased by the officers.

State Prosecutor Sandra Kosgei prayed for adjournment and told the court that KWS officers will testify during the next hearing.

She also said that the photographs of the said buffalo will be ready by then in order to be shown to the court.

Mulekyo adjourned the hearing and slated the next hearing for March 3, 2016.
