A middle-aged man was Tuesday sentenced to three years in prison by a Kikuyu court for damaging his grandmother's property.
Richard Maina Mwangi had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court was told that Maina committed the offence on October 20 in Gitaru, Kikuyu sub-county.
The court heard that on the said date, Maina came home drunk and made a lot of noises.
He demanded for food from his grandmother who at that time was alone since the other members including the accuser’s wife had left for a family Sacco meeting.
When he was told that there was nothing to eat, he took a panga that was outside the door, that the grandmother had just used in the shamba shortly and he destroyed a plastic tank valued at Sh20,000 used for storing water.
He also went destroyed house windows and a door.
The grandmother reported the matter to Kinoo police station where the accused was arrested.
In his mitigation, Maina said he was very sorry as he was under the influence of alcohol and he didn't know what he was doing by then.
He also said he couldn't commit such an offence to his grandmother when he's sober.
"I also have a family and two children and am the breadwinner, I humbly plead with this court to consider such when giving the judgement," said Maina.
Chief Magistrate James Ogweno, however, said the court had found the accused with a criminal offence.
"I therefore sentence the accused person to three years in prison," said Ogweno.
He has 14 days to appeal.
