In Nakuru town, most residential estates derived their names from unique things or events that happened there.
One such estate is Manyani Estate which derived its name from the high number of monkeys that frequented the area.
The monkeys strayed from the nearby Lake Nakuru National Park to cause mayhem within the estate by destroying crops on the farms and even stealing food from houses.
Welcome to Manyani Estate where monkeys are frequent uninvited visitors in people's homes
Even now you will not be surprised to see monkeys freely roaming within the estate in search of food.
Residents say the monkeys are a real nuisance and they have been forced to adopt the lifestyle of mingling with them.
Nelius Namacha has lived in Manyani for the last 15 years and says the monkeys stray from the park during seasons when it is flooded with lake water.
“There are times when the park gets flooded with lake water and the monkeys are displaced from the park and that is the time you will find many of them roaming around,” she says.
“They normally come to search for food and they even have the courage of getting inside people's houses,” she adds.
Aggrey Omondi, a resident and village elder at the estate say that the monkeys are common visitors at people homes especially if the home is manned by a woman.
“They really hate women and some have the courage of literally attacking women and snatching food away from them. You will not be surmised to come back home and find a number of them in the kitchen eating from your pot,” says Omondi.
