Maseno University students have accused security guards in the campus of harassment.

The students said the guards target specific students while searching people entering the campus.

“I was surprised when one of the officers followed me from the main gate among a group of around six students whom we had passed through the gate. He frisked me and went back. I was shocked why out of the six of us he decided to follow me alone, John Kalasinga, a student.

The students claimed the security officers mainly target male students.

A number of female students however, confirmed the claims saying they were rarely screened.

“The officers rarely screen the female ladies unless you dress in those tiny short cloths such as mini-skirts which raises there concern but generally the ladies are rarely screened nor frisked,” said Joan Wamboi a fourth year student.

“I was once in the company of four ladies, the security officer at the gate that day stopped me alone. When I asked why he did not frisk the ladies yet there was a female officer on duty too,” said Mike Kemboi.

The officers however refuted the claims saying they always frisked and screened everyone.

“Those are mere false claims for we do our work effectively without favoritism," said Ezekiel Omollo one of the security officers.

“If we are to curb insecurity in the school, we should not leave anything to chance. Each and every individual should be frisked for one can act so humble and good yet they have evil intentions,” said Chris Kiyai a third-year Bachelor of Criminologist student.
