Maseno traders on Monday raised complaints to Kisumu County authorities over alleged reluctance to repair security lights in Maseno market.

They say the lighting project has for more than a year stopped being operational since it broke down early in 2014 giving the traders a hard time during the nights.

Mary Adhiambo, a trader at the market told this writer that she spends dearly on fueling her kerosene lamps that she uses to light up her kiosk during the night.

“I buy kerosene daily and this reduces my profit margin,” she said.

She said that she was pained by the fact that she is faithfully paying daily levies to authorities who do not provide services basic to her.

Other traders at the market use candles or spotlights to light up their business premises during the night so that they may interact with their customers comfortably.

Speaking to Janet Osewe, the chairperson of the traders association, she said that she had more than once addressed the problem to relevant authorities through letters but to date nothing has been done.

She said that the traders had on Monday morning camped outside her offices complaining of lack of light during the night.

“I am not going to tire writing to them until our market is well lit,” she declared.

Lack of proper lighting at the market they say poses a great security risk to them and also customers whom mostly are students form Maseno University.
