Residents of Mataara sub location have lauded the county government for intervening in a water scarcity issue which has lasted four weeks.

The Kiambu county government has assured them free clean water following the acute water shortage.

One of the residents, Maureen Wangechi said on Monday they had been forced to go back to the river in search of water something he said was done in times of their early childhood.

Joseph Kang’ethe praised Kabogos’ leadership for the free water supply, saying he was initially buying three Jerri cans per day, which cost him Sh60 to sustain his young family.

“The scarcity had made me overburdened my children by allocating them more responsibilities even after a hard studying day,” he said.

Water shortage has been experienced in the area since February 5 after one of Mataara water project staff was sacked following bribery claims and harassment of water beneficiaries. He was further suspected to have been the course of water connection distortion at Kangari tank that supplies water to the rest of the sub location.

Mataara water project manager Anthony Gachunga said on Monday in Mataara that his leadership would put an initiative where a water bulldozer with a capacity of 16,000 litres would be distributing water in the area four times a week.

He said the project was aimed at bringing safe, clean drinking water close to the residents.

Speaking to press from Mataara, Gachunga noted that the project staff had resolved the matter permanently and the residents can now enjoy water again.

Gachunga further noted that they were in the process of installing pipes in areas that were not enjoying the water supply to address the water perennial problem of water shortage in the region.

He said that the area MCA Sammy Ng’ang’a had funded the project to facilitate the damage that hit the area for one month.

The damage cost the project 100,000. Mataara water project supplies water to more than 20,000 households where most of them have abandoned use of borehole or river water due to the treatment given to the projects water.
