Residents in Kisumu have expressed concerns over what they termed as intimidation by matatu operators in the city. The dwellers complained that the operators have not handled them with the respect they deserve as regular clients.
They said that operators of the Public Service Vehicles have for a long time harassed and caused them embarrassment.
Molly Okeyo (26) who stays in Kisumu’s Nyalenda estate claimed that the operators often abuse their clients especially when they do not want to board the vehicles.
“Operators in Kisumu often use abusive language towards commuters. In most cases they use words with very sinister connotative meanings in Dholuo,” she said.
“Other than lowering the integrity of city dwellers, I think this is not good for business. More often than not, ladies are the most affected,” added Okeyo.
James Onyango, a student based in the lakeside city was bitter. “For how long will we be exposed to such rogue operators?,” he lamented adding the government should bring back Michuki laws.
The operators refuted the claims saying they have a code of conduct and that members were often disciplined by the Saccos under which they are registered.
Ken Ouko, a driver in the lakeside city said disciplinary measures are often taken upon Sacco members whom clients have complained against.
Ouko also defended his colleagues saying some commuters were very stubborn when asked bus fare.
