Residents from Mavoko sub-county have expressed their anger over what they termed incredible environmental pollution by industrial companies.

Joseph Onyango, Stephen Kamau and Margaret Ndunge, residents of Athi River, Mlolongo and Syiokimau respectively separately spoke to this reporter in exclusive interviews on Sunday.

“I cannot imagine how much toxic air we inhale each single day as Athi River residents due to extreme pollution from the many industrial companies around,” said Onyango.

Onyango disclosed that several companies do not have proper ways of managing and disposing off their industrial wastes.

He said such companies had invented unethical ways of getting rid of their wastes which included channeling them into River Athi.

This was supported by Ndunge who noted that she had observed the same incident in a number of factories in Syokimau area that disposes off their garbage into Sabaki Stream especially at night.

Kamau on his part sited a parastatal based in Mlolongo town which shoddily constructed a drainage system that was draining sewer on Mombasa Road during the recent heavy rains.

Mavoko sub-county administrator, Onesmus Ituo, passed stun warning to such industrial companies and organizations stating that they will be exposed to the wrath of the law.

Ituo said all the institutions need to follow guidelines set by National Environmental Management Authority on how to handle and manage garbage so that no life gets threatened as a result of environmental pollution.

He said his office had laid down comprehensive strategies to detect and bring to book directors of institutions with such dubious characters.
