The national government needs to provide residents of Mavoko sub county with relief food due to increased poverty and hunger in the region.

This is according to Athi River MCA Michael Mutua who said majority of the residents were facing consequences of biting hunger.

Addressing members of the public in Athi River town on Sunday, Mutua wondered why the State ceased to consider the sub county under its special program.

"I do not understand why Mavoko sub county was scraped off from the national government's special program initiative, our people are suffering," said Mutua.

Mutua said the government had in the past been supporting the residents through provision of relief food due to high numbers of vulnerable families in the region.

He said the vulnerability levels had increased due to heavy rains that had seen floods sweep away livestock, households, houses among other property belonging to the residents.
