There is increasingly high destruction of environment in Mavoko sub county, a situation that is highly contributing to climate change.
This is according to Mavoko MP Patrick Makau who lamented that the situation was making the region susceptible to environmental disasters.
Makau who spoke to this writer on the phone on Wednesday said environmental destruction activities practiced by some of the locals are sand harvesting, charcoal burning, unnecessary deforestation and poor waste disposal and management among others.
He said such practices pose health risks to locals, arguing that the most affected areas are Athi River town, Mlolongo town, Kinanie village and Syokimau.
Makau said some industries in Athi River discharge their solid wastes to nearby Athi and Mto Wa Mawe Rivers polluting the waters.
He also cited Mlolongo, where he said illegal dumping of solid waste materials on private land had made such property too dumpy and filthy to develop, causing great injustices to owners.
In Kinanie and Lukenya villages, Makau said that the kind of sand harvesting that take place there on private land was incredible.
He said majority of the residents comprising youths who had dropped out of school harvest sand on private land which in many occasions sink, killing some of them while at work.
He said all residents should join hands in environmental conservation and protection to make the sub county a more habitable, safe and best place to be.
"Let everyone join us in ensuring we conserve our environment for our own good," he said.
