Constituency Development Fund (CDF) monies channeled towards bursaries are a right to bright but needy students in any constituency and nobody should use the funds to popularise themselves, Nakuru County governor Kinuthia Mbugua has said.
Speaking on Wednesday morning when he hosted school heads under the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KSSHA) for a breakfast meeting at the county headquarters, the governor regretted the fact that some needy students were missing out on the sponsorship for reasons that cannot even be explained.
He called for professionalism during the vetting process arguing that the funds are meant to improve the quality of education in the county and nothing less than that would not be tolerated.
"We want to ask the MCAs not to spend too much time on seeking political mileage when giving out bursaries but the education quality of these children," he said.
He stressed on the importance of selecting the bright and needy from all the applicants saying that sponsoring a few students who understands the importance of education was better than investing in a large group, some of who fall out on the way due to various reasons.
"Not that we are prioritising some individuals here, this is to make sure that at least the funds sponsors a beneficiary to another level rather than the hundreds who will not even be able to pay the balance," the governor added.
This comes at a time when many wards are in the process of vetting all bursary applicants for the 2016 academic year with final lists of all beneficiaries expected to be availed at local sub chief offices before the month ends.
