A Nyamira member of county assembly has been accused by his opponents of allegedly assuming the roles of chiefs by determine people to be arrested in connection with crimes by targeting his critics.
This comes barely a day after Mr. Ken Atuti of Gesima ward led Rimoni Ass. Chief and his Riooga counterpart Peter Maina to arrest two people alleged to be perpetrators of cattle theft inj the troubled Borabu- Sotik border.
Speaking on Monday at the ward, two aspiring MCAs took a jibe on the incumbent and accused him of overstepping his mandate by interfering with the roles of provincial administrators.
“I am shocked that the MCA can forcefully hijack the roles of provincial administrators yet he understands the law. He has continuously interfered with the execution of the chiefs mandate by determining who to be arrested and when. Time has come for him to desist from assuming role of other government officials,” said Mr. Julius Nyachieo.
Mr. Mokaya Maroko on his part accused the MCA of political witch hunt and insisted the two people who were arrested on Sunday were his point’s men in the ward and the incident was a wider scheme to intimidate his quest to take over in 2017.
“He is misusing our Chiefs. I think chiefs understand their roles and it’s unfair to arrest people without even a tip of evidence. I am the one being targeted because they (George Kerongo and Douglas Bogonko) are my chief campaigners. We cannot accept this political intimidation,” he said.
However, Mr. Atuti who spoke on phone to the reporter defended his move saying the two were arrested following demand by members of the public.
“We should not politicize sensitive issues like cattle theft. I neither assumed roles of chiefs nor did witch hunt someone. I only acted following the demand from the public and it’s the chiefs who executed their responsibilities by arresting the suspects. I am a leader and I lead by being guided by members of the public,” he said.
