Nominated MCA Esther Njeri Mengere now wants a special insurance fund for persons living with disabilities to be set up.
Mengere said that most insurance companies were unwilling to take children living with disabilities into their kitty claiming that they were expensive to maintain.
Speaking to the press in Nakuru on Monday, Mengere said that due to special needs, they often required medical attention making it important for them to have a comprehensive plan.
She added that she would table a bill before the county assembly seeking to have them discuss the possibility of cheap and affordable medical care for the disabled.
“Many of the parents are drained financially from the therapy sessions for the physically challenged. Even the young children with sight problems have to visit the doctors frequently.
The parents say that many insurance companies which have been approached refuse to take them in once they discover the condition of the children,” she added.
She added that with a good insurance plan, parents could be able to pay as little as Sh500 per month for treatment.
“Even insurance companies have been on the forefront of discrimination against them, which has forced many to end up in despair and discouragement,” she added
Mengere pointed the increased cases of cancer patients among children was also worrying.
She called on the county government to set up a special kitty to offer support for such kids.
