A member of the Nyamira County assembly has raised an alarm over alleged rising cases of road accidents along the Kisii-Nyamira highway in the recent times.
Bogichora ward MCA Beuttah Omanga expressed concern over reports of escalating accidents despite a heavy presence of law enforcement officers along the highway.
The MCA spoke in the wake of a tragic accident where an aged man died on the spot after he was reportedly hit by a speeding vehicle opposite Sironga Girls.
The Thursday accident happened hardly two weeks after a similar incident where three primary school children died on the spot while a motorcycle rider and one other child sustained critical injuries following an accident near Nyaikuro shopping centre on the same road.
“If it is some of our drivers who are tempted to speed due to the good condition of the road, then NTSA should intensify their operations to ensure that they weed out all the rogue drivers who are turning the Kisii-Nyamira highway into a death trap,” he said.
He further cited the need for stakeholders to organise a platform intended at developing a framework to facilitate the dissemination of road safety-related information such as the Highway Code to the local road users.
He was speaking while consoling the family of the aged man in Sironga who passed on Thursday in a road accident.
