Nominated Member of county assembly Esther Njeri Mengere now wants a law that will see parents who fight in front of their children charged for emotional torture.
Mengere pointed out that in cases of such, the people who were most affected were the children.
“It is increasingly becoming hard to counsel children who have seen their parents fight and even kill each other during domestic battles. I am seeking to have a bill that will see them charged for such,” she added.
Mengere who was speaking in Nakuru Town on Tuesday added, “We want them to get a sentence, which might run from six months or a hefty fine. This will help stop the increased cases of gender-based violence and also protect children involved,” she added.
In the bill she will also seek to have the county provide free counselling services for the children involved.
“In most cases the children are left wondering what went wrong. They end up crying and becoming an emotional wreck,” she added.
Mengere highlighted a recent case of where two children were locked in a house for two days with their dead parents.
“The man who killed the wife ended up committing suicide. Unfortunately, the children did not realise that the mother was dead and even the young one was suckling her mother. It is really hard to offer counselling to such people,” she added.
