Uasin Gishu County Assembly nominated MCA representing persons with disability Flora Cheptum has urged contractors to ensure they put alternative stairs to be used by the disabled when constructing storeyed buildings.
Speaking at the county assembly on Tuesday, Cheptum said the disabled are not considered during construction of tall buildings making it hard for them to access vital offices that could have an impact on their lives.
“It is sad when you want to access an office which is for example on the fifth floor which only has stairs for normal people. It will be hard for me to get there or else I seek help from someone which is hard is usually hard,” she said.
She said it is easier for them to access the offices if the contractors build alternative stairs for them to use.
“I humbly urge contractors to consider the disabled when constructing tall buildings especially the public offices, since the offices will not only be used by normal people but also the disabled,” the MCA said.
She said most buildings don’t even have lifts making their access hard.
