Nyamira County assembly speaker Joash Nyamoko has challenged members of county assembly to approach motions from non-partisan grounds to avoid divisions among themselves for the sake of promoting development.
In his 30min address to the members on Tuesday during the official re-opening of assembly after a month and a half break, Nyamoko took the opportunity to call for unity within the assembly during debating of motions in the house.
He said it was fundamental for MCAs to support or oppose motions based on ideologies and not collective decision of their respective coalitions.
“Our key mandate is to legislate, oversight and representing our people and we all know that. I understand the common practice that the majority carries the day in parliament, but it’s important we support motions by basing our arguments on ideologies and not common stand of our coalitions. Party politics are not important on matters legislation,” he said.
He urged both sides of the coalitions to hold 'Kamukunjis' to come with common resolutions on motions tabled to reduce the amount of time used in debating.
“When we debate our motions, it’s evident how we differ based on our political ideologies. However, I want to challenge both leadership to consider discussing motions to come with a common stand instead of waiting for debate time to show our political might. Development is important and that can be achieved if we speak from the same script,” he said.
He also cautioned the members against absenteeism, saying he will be forced to implement standing orders to de-whip the affected individuals.
“The standing orders on attending sessions are clear. You have to adhere to that and those who are fond of plying games with our regulations I will have to alternative but deal with them,” he added.
