The Media council of Kenya (MCK) has called on Governor Kinuthia Mbugua to support journalists in the county saying that they play a very significant role the society.
Addressing journalists during a retreat at a Naivasha hotel, MCK programs manager and acting deputy chief executive officer Victor Bwire said that Kenyans needed to access information in an entertaining but informative way.
"That can only be done by the men and women practising journalism who sacrifice their time and resources to have news stories delivered to the common mwananchi," he said.
He regretted the fact that journalists were being harassed and subjected to both physical and mental torture by some leaders, making it hard for them to play their role.
“As members of the fourth estate, we are the mirror and watchdog in the different communities where we operate from and nobody whatsoever should hinder our functionality as long as we remain true, impartial and factual,” he said.
"It is sad that in a country that is governed by a constitution and everybody aware of their responsibilities, such cases are still prevalent," he added.
He, however, urged the affected journalists not to relent from unearthing all fishy deals for the sake of accountability and ensuring that everybody takes responsibility for their actions.
“Journalism is a calling and once in it, never look back, do what you think is right and let the guilty ones complain,” he advised.
This comes after the country took to social media to show their solidarity with Daily Nation's parliamentary editor, John Ngirachu who was arrested and locked up for several hours.
