The media has been urged to spear head the mobilization of people to register as voters in the ongoing mass voter registration across the country.
Speaking in Nyamira on Monday, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Regional coordinator Charles Mutai said that there is a low turnout in many counties and especially in Nyamira some voter registration centers had only recorded as low as 300 voters’s registered in the first week alone.
Mutai said that there was need for both local and National media channels to help IEBC in sensitizing for the eligible voters t o turn out during the ongoing exercise.
“If the people are educated and mobilised, we will remove the ignorance that exists and apathy that sometimes accompanies this exercise and even the voting itself,” he added.
He though said that a few challenges were experienced in various areas in the county where the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits failed to work but all were rectified.
“The media has remained to be key when we are carrying out the exercise and all we want is there full support until it ends,” he added.
