Nominated MCA Esther Njeri Mengere has challenged women not to stay in abusive relationships.
Ms Mengere pointed out an increase in murder cases involving women in abusive relationship.
“Nakuru as of late has been recording cases of mothers who have been maimed for life and in some cases killed after being in such relationships,” she said.
Mengere said it was not worth living in such relationships as it often would end up with more emotional torture to the children.
“Many children suffer emotional abuse due to the mother being tortured and some of them end up committing suicide or eventually refusing to get married,” she said.
Mengere was speaking at a women’s meeting in Naivasha where she called for stricter rules for wives' batterers.
“The punishment they deserve should be stricter because no normal person can beat their wives to a pulp,” she added.
She called on police officers to act more swiftly when such cases are reported.
