The government of Kenya is spending a lot of money in salaries for civil servants. Probably the saddest news for taxpayers is realizing that there are duplications of roles.

This means that the government is using twice as much money in salaries as opposed to when duties and responsibilities are not duplicated.

When one person can do the work for two, it makes more economic sense to hire one person who can do the work of two and pay less in salary than hire two and pay more.

It is from this analogy that I welcome the move to merge state corporations. Kenya has 262 state corporations. Some of these corporations do the same work.

What then is wrong when they are merged? This will not only reduce cases of duplication of work but it will also unburden the taxpayers.

The state corporations act has proposed to either dissolve or merge parastatals and entities owned by the government.

While people will definitely lose jobs, the merits far much outweigh the demerits.
