The Kenya Meteorological Service has finalised plans to establish weather stations in counties.

Speaking on Wednesday at Kisumu Hotel, Kenya Meteorological Services officer Nicholas Maingi said that programme will be rolled out in 2016.

“Before, the weather stations were mainly where the country’s food basket is but since the weather is unpredictable, the national government wants maximise the readings,” said Maingi.

“Currently, the national government is running 70 automatic weather stations and 38 manned weather stations. Every hour, with the new development, there will be readings of weather in every county,” he said.

The Kenya Meteorological Services officer said with at least three automated machines placed in strategic places in counties, they would collect accurate weather data.

"For example, we can have one at the airport, one in town and another in Ahero and that will give reading every 30 minutes. So somebody will be taking readings and link to the national centre where the focus is done,” he said.

He added: “Those days we did not have sophisticated equipment, now we have better equipment. We are even running numerical models where the state of the atmosphere is being put in mathematical form.”

Maingi urged the county government to corporate and partner with Kenya Meteorological services in terms of setting up infrastructure needed to house the equipment.
