Njoro Member of Parliament Joseph Kiuna has called on the relevant authorities to regulate the number of business middlemen and brokers saying that the county risks losing a lot in terms of revenue collection.
Addressing a press briefing in Nakuru town on Tuesday, the MP noted that the number of businessmen thronging villages to buy agricultural produce directly from farmers before transporting them to other major markets and towns was worrying.
"Is it that there was no available market in Nakuru for what we grow or we lack an organised channel of distribution?" he posed.
The legislator called on the county government to improve on transport and communication networks to help ease movement of goods and services.
"With good roads and modern markets, the county's economic base will increase in capacity because the farmer will personally deliver his produce to the market and get all the profits than sell to a middleman at a reduced price, incurring losses," he said.
The most affected were potato, carrot, cabbage and milk farmers but Kiuna believes everything can be reversed if proper mechanisms were put in place.
He said doing away with middlemen and brokers will see the produce reach the local market which will in turn be translated into revenue for the county.
