A 13-year-old boy from Chulaimbo in Kisumu on Tuesday escaped death after a pit latrine he was using sunk while he was still inside.
The boy sustained minor injuries on the back following the incident.
He was treated at the Chulaimbo health center and discharged.
According to the boy, the toilet sunk while he was responding to a call of nature.
The floor of the toilet sunk while the walls remained intact.
The boy in an interview with this writer said he heard something crack and immediately he saw the floor sinking.
"The floor was sinking steadily, that gave me enough time to cling onto the walls tightly to avoid sinking," said the.
Okumu said that he moved swiftly towards the toilets door and pushed it open before jumping outside.
"I did not lock the door, and that was easier for me to get out. I thank God I survived the ordeal," said Okumu.
According to Okumu's father Peterson Ochieng, the toilet did not show any sign of weakness, hence he was surprised what had happened.
Confirming the incident, Karateng North Assistant Chief Joshua Omulo urged parents to ensure that such facilities are in perfect condition to avoid a repeat of the incident.
"Today's incident should be the last to occur, because a life could have been lost. Am calling on parents to ensure that their pit latrines are in good condition for safety purposes," said Omulo.
