The county government of Nyamira is set to complete construction of Miruka market in Nyamira South which had stalled following a standoff between traders and county officials.

The traders had boycotted remitting taxes over five months ago, complaining of alleged inadequate services from the county government.

They argued that the county has an obligation to construct the market without necessarily depending on the little money collected in form of taxes.

Tuesday evening, county secretary Mr Erick Onchana who visited the project ordered contractors to report back to work with immediate effect.

“We regret the standoff that has been around for a while now but it’s now time for the contractors to get beck to work and complete the construction as soon as possible. We want to see this place operational by early next year so that we progress as a team,” he said.

Onchana however skipped to address the standoff that has been there whether or not traders will be required to pay taxes which they boycotted a while ago.

“I don’t want to revisit that issue against. What is important is for the county to do its part by completing the structure as soon as possible. The rest will follow because we are people of order,” he said.

The move was lauded by a section of traders led by the market’s vice chairman Peter Ogari who termed the move as a ‘huge victory’ for taxpayers.

“We had been paying taxes before and they took that long to construct the modern market for us. This is a huge victory and we can only resume paying taxes once they complete the project,” he said.
