Residents of Mlolongo, Katani Division in Athi River sub county have been cautioned against hiding people living with disabilities.

Addressing this writer in his office in Mlolongo town on Tuesday, Assistant County Commissioner Obed Mose said the vice was on the rise in the region.

"I want to caution the residents of Mlolongo, Katani Division against hiding people living with disabilities in their houses because it infringes their fundamental rights," he said.

He said the culprits kept members of their families living with various different disabilities indoors, away from the public due to fear of being stigmatised.

He said the practice was escalating in the region, especially in Ngalani, Mlolongo, Katani, Githunguri and Kamburu sub locations.

He said the act denies the victims from benefiting from government support and incentives intended to improve their living standards.

Mose said the situation was deterring the government from effectively planning for the disabled in the region since data collection on those living with disabilities and nature of the disabilities was a problem.

He said the most affected were children.

The county chief called on the residents to develop a positive attitude change on people living with disabilities, expose them so that they can get government support.
