Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has backed Sharad Rao-led Judges and Magistrates vetting board to restore confidence in the judiciary amidst damming claims of corruption in the law enforcing arm of Government.
Mr Momanyi’s statement comes after the Supreme Court is fighting to restore its image following claims that veteran Judge Philip Tunoi received a bribe to influence the judgment of an election petition between Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu.
Speaking on Sunday and Nyansakia during commissioning of a waterhole, the Wiper Democratic MP urged Kenyans to work together with the board to restore sanity in the judiciary.
“Judicial system is fundamental in any society and it’s my wish that as Kenyans, we support the vetting board so that the suitability of judges and magistrates is determined. We know these judges and it’s important to participate as public in vetting of these judges. This is the only way we can bring sanity in the judiciary,” he said.
The flamboyant lawyer hailed the board for delivering ruling on a number of juries and challenged its members to be guided by honesty and integrity for the sake of restoring confidence in the judiciary.
“It’s only in courts where we expect to get justice and when he hear demining reports about corruption and other discouraging information’s, our confidence goes down. I have confidence in the board because its members are experienced and have helped by a larger extent to de-whip magistrate and judges who are notorious,” Momanyi told reporters.
He, however, urged the board to expedite its judgments on the fate of a number of judges and magistrates as a way of increasing its confidence from the members of the public.
“I have seen them working and I have no doubt that they are helping to reform our judiciary. However, it’s important that they expedite delivery of judgment on the cases so that the public works with them,” he said.
