Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has challenged Parliament to support a motion he drafted that seeks to reduce the number of IEBC commissioners to three and removal of constituency clerks.
Currently, IEBC has a total of nine commissioners on a full time basis and a host of clerks at the constituency level, a number Mr Momanyi said is unnecessary for the country.
Mr Momanyi who was commissioning a borehole at Kiabonyoru on Wednesday said the move will reduce substantially the amount of money incurred by the State in supporting the team in five years.
“Personally I think having nine commissioners is ridiculous especially when we are not in elections. We should only retain three after elections since they do not have much work to do in five years’ time. I hope Parliament will support the motion that I drafted to that effect. The rest should only be recruited towards general elections,” he said.
The Wiper Democratic legislator slammed constituency and county clerks, claiming that they had failed to execute their mandate of continuous voter registration.
“We cannot be paying clerks at the constituency and county level yet they fail to execute their mandate. For instance, you can evaluate their performance between 2013 elections and now. In fact if they were doing their job well, we would not be talking about mass voter registration. I think this is the right time to scrap those positions so that we hire them on a temporary basis,” he said.
He said the move will allow the country to save millions of taxpayers’ money paid top individuals whose work he said is minimal.
