Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has taken a jibe with the IEBC challenging it to make voter registration a continuous exercise as stipulated in the law.
Mr Momanyi who was addressing a rally at Nyakwerema region on Sunday said he was disappointed with the electoral body over what he termed as ‘basic negligence’ of the constitutional provisions.
He said the current officials at the constituency levels were making little effort to reach eligible voters despite being paid on taxpayers’ money.
“I am a disappointed man because IEBC has been committing basic negligence of the law. Voter registration is a continuous exercise and I wonder why those working at the constituency and county level are always in their offices doing nothing yet they should be doing the job. They are paid by taxpayers and we need to see them working,” he said.
He challenged IEBC chairman Isaack Hassan to demand more from his officials at the grassroots saying they were the reason behind to persistent political intrigues between the opposition and government.
“These officials are most of the times idle yet we have many people who need to be registered. They have to visit our wards and do the job. I hope the chairman should now wake up and push his officers to work. We don’t want instances where we as opposition are always complaining of less voter registration activities,” he said.
He slammed the recent advertisement by IEBC of recruiting two officials per ward for a massive recruitment scheduled February saying the number was small to attend to increasing population.
“We have many people who need to be registered given that those who have been in office have done little. Two officials per ward cannot be able to get more people who are eligible. They should have been at least six per ward,” he said.
