The residents said the operators have of late been ignoring traffic rules as they carry out their operations, a move which has resulted to increased cases of accidents in the area.
Speaking to this writer on Monday, the residents raised concern over the trend, saying the operators are putting their lives in danger.
The residents said they do not feel safe when walking in the streets of Mombasa and urged the relevant stakeholders in the transport industry to attend to their plea quickly.
“Tuktuk operators do not care whether there are zebra crossing signs in a particular area. They over speed without caring whether there is someone crossing the road or not,” said Mr Dennis Katana, a Mtwapa resident.
His sentiment was echoed by Noah Odongo and Patricia Wanja who are also concerned with the current state of affairs.
Wanja said tutuk drivers have in the recent past become very notorious yet most of them are not charged for flouting the traffic rules.
“These people are very notorious but unfortunately most of them never get arrested,” said Wanja.
This comes days after a tuktuk driver nearly hit a child near Mtwapa market.
