Kisii is a town that is predominantly inhabited by the Abagusii people.
Being the metropolis of Southern Nyanza, it has attracted a large number of investors from other counties and even from foreign countries.
However, there are a few upsetting things the town dwellers practise that annoy guests to the city but they will never seem to change because as they say, old habits die hard. Some of these annoying behaviours include:
1. Thinking that everybody in town speaks Ekegusii. It is common that when one meets a Kisii in town, their first conversations begin in Ekegusii. When the Kisii people realise you don't understand the language they then switch to a national language which can be clearly understood by many. Most of them are touts, conductors and gatekeepers.
2. Conversing in Ekegusii while in public offices. There are a large number of public offices in Kisii town, but it is rare for Kisiis to speak in official national language. They will discuss with colleagues in Ekegusii, but those who don't understand are sometimes left out of the conversations.
3. Motorists barely observe road rules. The congestion in Kisii town is contributed by some drivers who defy road rules by parking along roads in non-parking areas, carrying passengers exceeding the required number, speeding and careless overtaking. These are the most annoying things the people coming town for the first time experience.
