Members of Parliament from Kisii have been cautioned against influencing appointment of school heads in the region.

They have instead been urged to work with the Ministry of Education to promote education growth in the area.

Women Representative Sally Otara on Sunday alleged that a number of legislators were influencing the appointment and transfers of school heads, contrary to the law.

She said the habit has literally led to diminishing performance by schools in national examinations and challenged the legislators to play a ceremonial role in overseeing the management of schools.

“I am not refuting that as leaders we should not oversee what takes place in our schools but then, I am aware of havoc caused by some of my colleagues who always influence the appointment and transfer of school heads. The trend is worrying and I guess it's the reason why many schools struggle to perform in national exams,” she said.

Mrs Otara urged the Ministry of Education to execute its mandate by ensuring MPs do not interfere with management of institutions.

“It’s true that some of these MPs have their own interests in our schools and it’s high time the Ministry of Education does its job by protecting school managements from unwarranted pressure from honourable members,” she said.

Even though she did not mention specific incidents, she said a number of school heads from the region had registered complaints.

She said such incidents might endanger delivery of quality education.

“Of course I don’t have to mention specific cases but the truth is a number of MPs are seriously interfering with school managements. They want to impose their own friends and this trend risks poor delivery of education in terms of quality. It’s high time they desist from interfering with our institutions and only work with other stakeholders to improve the quality of education,” she said.
