Members of the national assembly have been urged to support an upcoming motion that seeks to reduce the number of IEBC commissioners.
The motion, sponsored by Borabu MP Ben Momanyi, seeks to reduce the number of the electoral body’s top bosses from the current nine to three and completely do away with the constituency clerks.
Mr Momanyi says the nine commissioners, who are employed on a full-time basis, and the many clerks at the constituency level, are a very unnecessary burden for the taxpayer.
“I think having nine commissioners is ridiculous especially when we are not in elections,” the lawmaker said.
“We should only retain three after elections since they do not have much work to do in five years’ time. I hope parliament will support a motion I have drafted to that effect,” he added.
The MP faulted the constituency-based clerks’ failure to continuously register voters, saying they had failed to do their job.
“We cannot be paying clerks at the constituency and county level yet they fail to execute their mandate,” Momanyi said.
