According to several sources, members of the sect are slowly regrouping and have already started extorting money from residents.

“They are all over. They were used in the hawkers eviction exercise by the boss. They even control these stores,” says a trader at the Mburu Gishua road.

The trader talks cautiously saying that the ‘members’ are all over.

Upon probing, the trader refused to say who the ‘boss’ is.

“Just ask anyone at (the) Nasher Market … they are the ones controlling it,” the trader added.

Residents who cannot be named for security reasons said the sect is enjoying good relations with a senior politician in the county ahead of the next election.

Speaking to a local newspaper, the chairman of Nakuru Street Traders and Hawkers Association was bold and categorical.

“It is no secret, there is an illegal gang that operates in the town and has been extorting money from traders and matatu operators,” he said.

Two MPs in the county have also raised alarm over the sect.

However, area police detail said they have no intelligence about the regrouping of Mungiki in the town.
